Prospects for Cooperation in the Cultivation and Processing of Licorice Discussed

A delegation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project, “Regional Industry Development through the Transfer of Cultivation and Processing Technologies of Licorice (Glycyrrhiza) in Uzbekistan,” implemented by Yakuzemi Informative Education Center Co., Ltd., visited the International Innovation Center for the Aral Sea Basin.

The visit began with a tour of the Center’s experimental fields, where research on licorice cultivation is being conducted. Specialists of the Center presented the results of ongoing scientific studies and highlighted the potential of licorice as a valuable medicinal and industrial crop contributing to the sustainable development of the region.

The delegation then visited the Laboratory of Crop Diversification, where they were introduced to research activities focused on the introduction and adaptation of promising plant species to the soil and climatic conditions of the Aral Sea region. During the visit, the Head of the Laboratory, Parakhat Toreshov, provided a comprehensive presentation on the activities of the International Innovation Center for the Aral Sea Basin, outlining its key areas of work, objectives, and ongoing scientific and practical projects aimed at ecosystem restoration and the development of sustainable agriculture.

The guests showed particular interest in research on cultivating beneficial plants on degraded lands, improving crop tolerance to soil salinity, and promoting the practical application of scientific innovations in agricultural production. An active question-and-answer session provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions on topics of mutual interest.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties discussed prospects for further cooperation in scientific research, technology and knowledge exchange, as well as the joint implementation of projects related to the cultivation and processing of licorice. The visit concluded with both sides expressing a strong interest in strengthening partnership relations and reaching an agreement to prepare and sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which will serve as a foundation for long-term cooperation between the organizations.
